Biography
Professor Esan Iyer is a Full Professor in Law. He previously served as Acting Registrar at the University of Zululand, as well as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law. He is an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa and practised law prior to transitioning into higher education.
His research areas include Child Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and Nonverbal and Legal Communication. He has presented papers at both local and international conferences and has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students to completion.
In addition to his academic work, Professor Iyer is an accomplished poet and has published extensively in both local and international accredited law journals.

Prof. Lizelle Ramaccio Calvino is an Associate Professor of Private Law at the University of Zululand and an admitted attorney with extensive academic and legal experience.
She has held leadership roles including Acting Legal Director and Council Member, and has contributed significantly to academic scholarship and community engagement.
She is widely published, supervises postgraduate students, and received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Community Engagement in 2022 and 2025.

Biography
Adv. Heidi Schoeman is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Law at the University of Zululand. She previously served as Head of Programme: Law at the Independent Institute of Education and as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg.
Prior to academia, she worked as a legal advisor and researcher across various organisations and served as Pretoria Advice Office Director for the Black Sash in the 1990s. She is an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and completed pupillage at the Johannesburg Bar.
She specialises in teaching law to non-law students and has developed successful tutor and peer mentorship programmes. She was runner-up in the Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award (2019).
Her research focuses on legal education and the use of learning technologies, and she has presented papers both locally and internationally.
