Adv. Heidi Schoeman is a senior lecturer in the Department of Law at the University of Zululand. Previously she was the Head of Programme: Law at the Independent Institute of Education and before that she was a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg.

Before she joined the world of academia, she held various positions as a legal advisor and legal researcher at small, medium, and large corporations. She was also the Pretoria Advice Office Director of the Black Sash in the 90s.

Adv. Schoeman is an advocate of the High Court of South Africa and successfully completed pupillage at the Johannesburg Bar.

Throughout her academic career, Adv. Schoeman has lectured a variety of subjects, most of which are commercial in nature. She has lectured modules at various NQF levels and in a variety of qualification types. Adv. Schoeman specialises in teaching law to non-law students. She has established various successful tutor programmes throughout her academic career. She is also the academic co-ordinator of the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law’s peer-mentorship programme. In 2019, Adv. Schoeman came second in the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence in the developed category.

Adv. Schoeman has a keen interest in teaching law by making use of learning technologies. She has presented various papers (both nationally and internationally) on this topic.

Qualifications:

  • BLC LLB (UP).
  • LLM (Unisa).
  • Dip Corp Law (UJ) cum laude.

Research interests:

  • Legal education.
  • The use of learning technologies in Higher Education.
  • Cyber law.
